Owing to Industrialization and enhancement of man-made industrial environments as well as shortage of green landscape, the parks were defined as “a context to preserve a sense of nature” in cities. Regarding the enhancement of urban spaces and growth of industrial sites, the need for green spaces and reclamation of industrial sites becomes more crucial and the philosophy of designing parks, restoration of the urban decay and improvement of green space comes to existence. Linking the old regions to new and modern region of the city, the green space plays an important role as a joint between the regions which provides the regeneration of old urban decay. However, designing parks along rivers, paths and linking the modern and dull fabrics together are new steps toward regeneration of lost nature in the modern life. Presently, the new concept of providing a green structure along the routes and traffic roads as well as regenerating green space along the transportation lines lead to a need for “landscape architecture” profession. The term landscape is currently used in wide range of urban and suburban areas that reveals new challenges at the scale of a city (boundaries_affiliation_quality and environment). At the present time, in response to the increasing challenges of urban life, the landscape architects are working on significant projects of great scales in landscape fields. Allain Provost is a well known hardworking landscape architect among French landscape professionals, whose works includes multiple landscape designs in urban fabrics (street landscape, urban parks, city edges, squares, plazas and etc). He greatly considers the main role of identity and context in his design and showcases his idea of acknowledging the changes of context and project during time in the same way but in different styles. Alain Provost’s landscapes encompass his design principles: Regular lines, sharp geometric shapes, playing with water and providing color schemes by planting. However, diversity and enchantment of his design despite its prevailing geometric order in long paths is admirable. Having considered the history of the site and essential spaces for different levels of society and age, he has provided a green sustainable surface to reconcile with nature in formal and linear urban space patterns that will help the environment sustainability and improve the quality of life based on industrial standards. Provost’s projects are highly influenced by the historical, natural and cultural context and still match the city and urban life at the same time at different scales. This essay discusses some of his different urban projects (The Bordeaux tramway network, The La defence belvedere, Diderot Park) and reveals their significant features in designing urban landscape.
