Abstract

There are several spaces in cities that are never used, although they are allowed be in them. It seems that these spaces are invisible and does not exist. The existence of these spaces can be caused by various factors, such as weakness in planning and design, or functional and physical limitations. By ignoring them, social and safety issues will be arise during the time and also they can turn into the weakness for the city. This is despite the fact that many of these spaces have potentials to turn into quality places. This article which is a type of field research, describes the experience of Hamsaakht Urban Activists Society-NGO in revitalizing an urban void adjacent to Sobhani Square in Shiraz, in order to find how activists and non-governmental organizations can be effective on revitalizing urban voids, with the participation of users, and what challenges do they face in this way? And what effects will the revitalizing an urban void have on other similar spaces in the area? The method of the current research is a field research with the method of observation of the sample members, in this technique, the activists paid by holding events to attract the participation and sensibility of the residents and increase their sense of belonging in order to see if there are significant physical changes in this place compared to other silent spaces of the residential complex. Whether or not there will be an explosion and what effect these changes will have on other spaces. The results of this research show that although tactical urbanism methods have been successful, but due to the lack of trust in urban management and as a result, its generalization to the interventions of other urban activists, as well as the lack of belonging of the residents of this area due to rental housing, the users acted passively in front of minimal spending. And sufficient social capital for change was not created by the beneficiaries. However, due to the effectiveness on the board of directors of the residential complex and the municipality, with physical changes and the creation of uses in similar urban voids, measures have been taken to revitalize these spaces.
