Abstract

Organizing the physical structure of a metropolitan city such as Tehran in a sensible and acceptable way which could be understandable for the majority of people is one of the main stages in regional planning for the city. Although urban planners and experts agree on the fact that Tehran does not have a coherent structure and it is not legible enough for people to have a clear mental image of the city, the residents of the city make a mental image of the city throughout the time whether it is complete and clear or not. Urban development in Tehran was without having a specific plan and was occasionally and dispersed which made the city fragmented. It is hoped that the fragmented structure of the city to be organized in the future decades by having the new master plan accepted. Therefore, one of the principles in the new master plan was to organize the physical structure of the city. In this paper through a critical approach to the process of generating the physical and spatial structure of the city, a new complementary method is proposed.
