Abstract

There is a hint of the science of landscape as process and pattern, and of landscape design and management interventions; of the social and political relationships that underlie landscape, and of different cultural readings of landscape. These are not only different forms of landscape narrative but also different ways of knowing the world. One result of the translation of landscape thinking into different settings can be a sharpening of points of difference, and a central theme of this chapter is the tension between landscape as conventional and typically privileged knowledge and other expressions of landscape as a way of knowing the world.
